Reproductive Rights As women, it is important to remember that the reproductive freedoms we now have can be easily taken away. Some people take for granted the accessibility to birth control, condoms, and abortion. President Bush has initiated policies since coming into office that threaten women’s choices. As the Bush administration takes over, it is important for women and men to come together to support women’s rights. â€Å"Bush is setting a tone for anti-choice legislation, so I expect that any legislator who is anti-choice will put something in this year,† said Jessica Morgan, president of the Baltimore chapter of the National Organization for Women (Koenig, B2). Second, he could advise Congress on the legality of anti-abortion legislation. Finally, he could back away from enforcement of a 1994 law that made it a federal crime to obstruct access to abortion clinics (Issues 2000). Liberal groups argue that his opposition to current laws in these areas make him unfit to serve as attorney general. Ashcroft has said, â€Å"he considers Roe vs. Wade a ‘settled law’ although he has worked repeatedly to overturn it† (Devan, A01). â€Å"I hope the president has seen the sadness and the fear and the pain engendered by this nomination,† said democratic Senator Charles Schumer from New York.†I hope we will not have to go through a similar battle when Supreme Court nominees come before us.† (Devan, A01). â€Å"Today’s close vote demonstrates the decisiveness of John Ashcroft’s nomination for attorney general.
